Steve Smith, DPhil, is an independent consultant and founder of STEM Knowledge Partners, where he advises scholarly publishers, societies, and research organizations on AI-era strategy, content licensing, publishing models, and sustainable community value. He has held senior publishing roles at AIP Publishing, Frontiers, the American Psychological Association, Wiley, and Blackwell, working across journals, books, open access, society partnerships, product development, and research integrity. His recent work has focused on practical frameworks for AI content access, licensing, entitlement, MCP/RAG pilots, and the shift from access to context, provenance, and judgment in scholarly communication. He has served on NISO’s Information Policy and Analysis Committee and has written on AI, trust, and the future of scholarly publishing for The Scholarly Kitchen and Research Information.
